Make MUSIC part of your summer!
The Music School of Delaware is your place for summer fun! Summer is the perfect time to explore new instruments, camps or programs. Take advantage of the flexible summer session to expand your own or your child’s musical horizons.
Register by May 1 for lessons, camps, workshops and classes and we’ll waive your processing fee—a $20 savings! Registration deadline is June 11 and space is limited, so please register early. Financial assistance is available; application forms for financial aid are due June 1.

PRIVATE STUDY
INSTRUMENTAL, SUZUKI ACADEMY & VOCAL LESSONSAll ages and levels (Music School faculty)

Private instruction is offered in voice, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano, organ, harpsichord, harp/Celtic harp, guitar, bass guitar and mandolin. A minimum of two hours of lessons is required in the eight-week summer session. Additional lessons may be scheduled at a rate of $32.82 per half hour. Lesson length varies and can be 30, 45 or 60 minutes long. (Suzuki Academy group classes resume in Fall 2010.)

This celebration-packed music camp experience was inspired by observing children at play. Through storytelling, your child will develop an early awareness of rhythm, movement, singing and drama. Not sure if your child is ready to take piano lessons? Afraid to invest in a piano, only to discover your child’s interest was a passing phase? This daily class allows children to explore the piano through guided instruction in playing, music reading, composing and technique while having fun. Parents will receive a written evaluation of the child’s readiness to take piano lessons and are invited to attend the class on the last day. The student must be able to focus attention on teacher’s directions, maintain self-control and participate positively in all class activities.

COMPOSITION
INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE MUSIC, IMPROVISATION & COMPOSITION9 to 12 years (Chuck Holdeman)

In this introductory workshop, students will participate in improvisation and take first steps in composing, both in a group setting and individually. Music-reading ability and experience as an instrumentalist or singer is useful but not required. No previous composition experience is necessary. Compositions will be notated on paper and in music software. At the end of the week, parents and friends will be invited to a mini-performance including student improvisation and new tunes.

DELAWARE YOUNG COMPOSERS WORKSHOP
13 to 18 years (Chuck Holdeman)

Students will immerse themselves in the compositional process in a group setting with composer Chuck Holdeman. The workshop is open to students with any level of experience composing, including no experience, although music-reading ability is required, along with some competency as an instrumentalist or singer. Any style of music is acceptable. During the course of the workshop, each participant will compose a short piece that will be performed and recorded by the participants. The compositions will be written using music software when possible (instruction included). Sessions will include exercises in improvisation.

YOUTH STRING CAMP

This lively camp is designed for young string players (Suzuki or traditional) at the advanced-beginner level and up to support students’ weekly private lessons, offer fun summer learning in a different format and provide musical enrichment outside the academic year. All students will be placed in appropriate classes based on age and experience.

This comprehensive music camp will focus on orchestral and chamber music for advanced and intermediate string, woodwind, brass and percussion students. Students will participate in full orchestra rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, master classes and coached chamber music sessions, as well as movement sessions and special presentations by professional guest artists and ensembles. Lunch is provided daily. A placement audition is required for participation.
Counselor Positions (100% tuition remission) will be awarded to rising high school seniors and college freshmen by audition. Fellowships (including a small stipend) will be awarded to rising college sophomores and older by audition. All other students are eligible to audition for a select number of Leadership Scholarships (50% off tuition). Financial aid is available by application.

In this workshop for advancing pianists, participants will work in solo and ensemble settings focusing on performance skills, musicianship and literature. Activities include private lessons, master classes, duo piano and duet rehearsals, coaching sessions and group classes. The week will begin with The Music School of Delaware Piano Competition and culminate in recital performances by all participants. Featured guest will be Hugh Sung, Curtis Institute faculty pianist.

CHORAL ARTS WEEK
SING JOYFULLY! A TREBLE CHORAL & ARTS CAMP7 to 12 years, unchanged voices (Marybeth Miller, Music School faculty and special guests)

This camp for children with unchanged voices focuses on choral performance and healthy singing techniques, enriching the experience with other fine arts. Along with choral singing and rehearsals, students will participate in music theory and ear-training, drama, visual arts and dance/movement activities each day. Campers will join the older students from Summer Sing for Young Adults for certain activities throughout the week, and special guests of interest to the young singer will be featured daily. The week will culminate in a combined performance with the Summer Sing for Young Adults camp on Friday afternoon.

Special guests of interest to young adult singers will entertain and teach daily. The week will culminate with a combined performance with the Sing Joyfully! camp on Friday afternoon.

ACTING

This workshop for students with all levels of experience coaches participants in the successful preparation for a dramatic and/or musical theatre audition. Activities include monologue and scene work, an acting class, improvisation, theatre games and vocal training. The week will culminate on Friday afternoon in a performance for family and friends, in which each student will perform on stage.

This weekly class will introduce students to playing rock music and rehearsing and performing with others, with an emphasis on playing and working out songs together. Students are encouraged to bring MP3s of songs that they would like to learn. The class will culminate with a casual performance for family and friends. Enrollment is limited to a maximum of three guitars, one bass and one drum set; additional sections will be added if necessary.

BEGINNING STEEL BAND

Spend a week with the sounds of the tropics! In this steel drum ensemble camp, students will learn about the history of the steel drum or "pan" and perform traditional styles, including soca, calypso and reggae. Students will have the opportunity to learn to play the different types of drums, including lead, double tenor, cellos and bass. No musical background is required.

CLASS PIANO FOR ADULTS II
Adults 18 years and up (Albert Pinkerton)
Mondays: June 7, 14, 21, 28, July 12, 19, 26, August 2
6:30-7:30 p.m.
This class is designed especially for those with basic piano skills including reading treble and bass clefs and understanding basic rhythms, chords and scales (C, G, F). The class places strong emphasis on fluent reading, secure rhythm, controlled technique and expressive performance. Theory, sight-reading, harmonization, improvisation and ensemble activities may also be addressed, as well as the instruction of the development of efficient practice skills.
REQUIREMENTS: Telephone interview with instructor; daily access to a piano and time for regular practice

Summer Policies & Information
HOW TO REGISTER
| • | Registration deadline is Friday, June 11, 2010. | |
| • | Return completed registration form with full payment to the appropriate branch address. | |
| • | A $20 nonrefundable Summer Processing Fee applies to all summer registrations in addition to tuition and materials fees. Fee is waived if participant registers and pays in full by May 1 for all lessons, camps, classes and/or workshops. | |
| • | Full payment = Summer Processing Fee + Tuition + Materials Fee | |
| • | Multi-camp discount: Enroll in more than one camp/class/workshop and get 20% off the lesser-priced camps/classes/workshops. (Does not apply to private lessons; discount is per student, not per family; does not apply to tuition already discounted by financial aid.) |
ENROLLMENT
Enrollment in all courses is limited. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and must be secured by paying tuition and fees in full. The Music School reserves the right to cancel camps/workshops/classes due to insufficient enrollment.
TEACHER ABSENCE
Lessons missed due to teacher absence will be made up but are to be scheduled directly with the teacher. The Music School reserves the right to provide a refund in lieu of a make-up lesson at its sole discretion.
STUDENT ABSENCE
There are no make-ups or refunds for missed lessons or classes due to student absence or for early withdrawal.
REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY
| • | Before June 1, 2010: Full tuition and materials fees will be refunded. $20 nonrefundable Summer Processing Fee will not be refunded. | |
| • | After June 1, 2010: No refund of any amount will be made. Please contact the appropriate branch to cancel/withdraw. |
SPECIAL NEEDS/DISABILITIES
The Music School of Delaware serves many people with special needs and developmental or physical disabilities. When registering, those with special needs or circumstances are asked to volunteer pertinent information so that the best placement can be made for the student. The Music School facilities are ADA compliant. The Wilmington Branch has an elevator that permits easy access to the second floor.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
The Music School of Delaware administers a financial assistance program intended for families who have restricted financial circumstances. Financial Aid Application Forms are available at the front desk of either branch. The due date for completed Financial Aid Application Forms, with the required supporting documentation, is June 1, 2010, for summer 2010 and academic year 2010-2011 programs. Families requesting aid must submit a Financial Aid Application Form with supporting documentation for any year in which aid is being requested, even if they have received aid in the past. However, families who are awarded financial aid for the summer do not need to reapply for the fall.
